ORTHO/HETERO DOX - created by STATIC INTERFERENCE - Mara Ravins & Caroline Mardon, St. Andrew’s Church, Toronto. February 28, 1982.

This performance examined the limiting boundaries of our belief systems.

A large space was divided up into a red and yellow area, each containing a similar domestic setup with numerous objects.

Blindfolded, Caroline and Mara break out of garbage bags.

They explore their space, get soiled in paint and remove each others blindfolds smearing each other with their own colour. Each then retreats to her own side to begin a series of distinct domestic rituals, ie: Mara binds her legs with lengths of yellow ribbon, Caroline washes her foot in red paint.

Their actions lead to disagreement and conflict as they try to penetrate each others space. Exhausted by their ideological battle, they take pots of red and yellow paint and move toward white banners, centre back. Simultaneously, each paints a banner and then breaks through to the next one.

Eventually their paint runs out and they are confronted by a wall of mirrors. After a moment of silence, they smash the mirrors with a hammer.
